Get To Know Me A Little
About Kevin
I have always enjoyed taking photos although not being in them myself. I started as many an 80's kid did with a disposable point and shoot camera and then upgrading as time went on and even landing on iPhone cameras. But iPhones can only take you so far when it comes to the intricacies of photography that a DSLR or higher end film cameras can go. Photography for me lets me not only lets me explore my surrounding visually, but also through the lens of a camera.
I was finally able to pick up my first DSLR a Nikon d5500 crop sensor which I quickly outgrew around 2016 and then upgraded to the full frame D750 which I still use today. I was not satisfied with my knowledge of photography however and started looking for colleges that offered photography classes. It took a while and then I was my job took me to Ventura CA where I finally found a program that offered a photography program and since I still had part of my GI bill money from my military days I signed up for the program.
Ventura College and my new found love for film
For a long time I wanted to take a class in photography; I found one while I was pursuing my business degree, but did not have a DSLR at the time so I could not take the class. Over the next several years, I still had a desire to take a class but could not find one until I move to Ventura California. As luck would have it I had enough GI bill money left over so I could enroll in the degree program and not just one class.
I was disappointed when I learned the intro class was a mandatory film and darkroom class. I told myself that after the class I would never shoot film again and thought how much of a waste of time the class would be. I could not have been more wrong! After the first few weeks of class I was hooked, I could not wait to get in the darkroom and develop and make a print. I new that once the class ended- that I wanted to continue shooting and developing film so I scoured Ebay and found an enlarger for my home and then found myself a medium format Rolleicord and a 4x5 large format press camera. and have been shooting film ever since.
I continued with the photography program at Ventura College and earned my AA in photography in 2022.
My photography style
Most of my work is of landscapes and nature as those are the subjects most easily accessible to me and with living on the Central Coast of California I have an abundance of places to explore. I also enjoy taking photos of sports, events, and I love taking long exposure photos at night and seeing all the shapes and colors that exist just beyond the reach of the human eye.
